Researchers find 400 year old Ice Age plants in Arctic able to grow anew as glaciers retreat

(Phys.org) —A team of researchers from the University of Alberta led by, Catherine La Farge, has found that mosses and liverworts covered by ice over 400 years ago and now exposed due to glacial melting, are able to start growing again. In their paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team describes how carbon dating showed the plants to be from a time just prior to the Little Ice Age

The research team ventured to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago to see what changes were occurring in the Arctic due to global warming—the Teardrop Glacier on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, they note, has retreated more than 650 feet over the past several hundred years. Just next to the glacier's edge, the team found some green growth among clumps of exposed dead plant material that had been under the ice for centuries. Intrigued, they collected some samples and brought them back to their lab for study.

The team put 24 cultures in an ideal environment and found that 11 of them began to grow, representing four distinct taxa. The plants, known as bryophytes—moss, lichen, liverworts, etc—don't have vascular tissue to pump fluids, a property that helps them survive in very . of the samples showed that the plants had been living approximately 400 to 615 years ago—a time just before the (1550-1850). Byrophytes have another property, called totipotency that allows any cell of the plant to reproduce and grow into a whole new plant.

The team put 24 cultures in an ideal environment and found that 11 of them began to grow, representing four distinct taxa. The plants, known as bryophytes—moss, lichen, liverworts, etc—don't have vascular tissue to pump fluids, a property that helps them survive in very cold climates. Carbon dating of the samples showed that the plants had been living approximately 400 to 615 years ago—a time just before the Little Ice Age (1550-1850). Byrophytes have another property, called totipotency that allows any cell of the plant to reproduce and grow into a whole new plant.

The findings dispel the common belief that land exposed by melting glaciers becomes populated by new plant growth exclusively via seeds or spores carried by the wind. Instead, some plants lying frozen beneath the ice are apparently able to survive and begin growing again when the environment changes. This suggests that Earth scientists will have to take a new look at models meant to portray how ecosystems recover from glaciers after they retreat.

The researchers note that plants aren't the only type of life being exposed by melting glaciers — cyanobacteria and green terrestrial algae have also been spotted, some of which haven't ever been seen before.

New article published - Early inflorescence development in the grasses (Poaceae)

Elizabeth A. Kellogg, Paulo E. A. S. Camara, Paula J. Rudall, Philip Ladd, Simon T. Malcomber, Clinton J. Whipple and Andrew N. Doust

Abstract

The shoot apical meristem of grasses produces the primary branches of the inflorescence, controlling inflorescence architecture and hence seed production. Whereas leaves are produced in a distichous pattern, with the primordia separated from each other by an angle of 180°, inflorescence branches are produced in a spiral in most species. The morphology and developmental genetics of the shift in phyllotaxis have been studied extensively in maize and rice. However, in wheat, Brachypodium, and oats, all in the grass subfamily Pooideae, the change in phyllotaxis does not occur; primary inflorescence branches are produced distichously. It is unknown whether the distichous inflorescence originated at the base of Pooideae, or whether it appeared several times independently. In this study, we show that Brachyelytrum, the genus sister to all other Pooideae has spiral phyllotaxis in the inflorescence, but that in the remaining 3000+ species of Pooideae, the phyllotaxis is two-ranked. These two-ranked inflorescences are not perfectly symmetrical, and have a clear “front” and “back;” this developmental axis has never been described in the literature and it is unclear what establishes its polarity. Strictly distichous inflorescences appear somewhat later in the evolution of the subfamily. Two-ranked inflorescences also appear in a few grass outgroups and sporadically elsewhere in the family, but unlike in Pooideae do not generally correlate with a major radiation of species. After production of branches, the inflorescence meristem may be converted to a spikelet meristem or may simply abort; this developmental decision appears to be independent of the branching pattern.

About us

What are the cryptogams? Certainly we see them all the time, but generally ignored. Remember slip on a green stone that took you around some waterfall? Of a whitish patches on the trunks of trees? Ferns that adorn the ceilings and walls of several houses? And that thing dark green is shrouded in the Japanese dish Sushi? Yes, all of these examples illustrate the cryptogams.

In short, cryptogams is an old term to describe plants that do not produce seeds, in fact the translation of the word means something like "reproductive parts not visible" in opposition to the other major group of plants, phanerogams, which means "reproductive parts visible ", ie plants that produce seeds and flowers.

At the University of Brasília exist the Cryptogamic Laboratory, part of the Department of Botany, which in turn is within the Institute of Biology.

This lab is not just a place of education, but also research, at both the undergraduate and graduate. Just one example of the importance of this place and without wanting to sound dramatic, but this lab is responsible for all the Brazilian Midwest when it comes to a group of plants called Bryophytes, the well-known "moss", a group that is within the cryptogams.

In order to better disseminate the work of teachers and students of this lab was created this site, which is also used to disseminate information about this enigmatic group of plants that have a large biotechnological potential and ecological, but because they are often small and hidden (the word "crypto" in cryptogam) did not arouse our interest when we look at the world without the eyes of an initiate into the mysteries of nature.
